Road Test Car Requirements in NY (2026)

For a New York road test, you bring the car. It must have valid registration, insurance and inspection, two permanent license plates, working doors and a clean passenger seat belt for the examiner. It must also be clean and in good working order. Only your accompanying driver may come with you, and no other passengers are allowed.

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) examiners are in charge of testing your driving skills after you’ve been trained, but they do not provide the test car. It’s your responsibility to bring the vehicle you will use to qualify for a driver’s license. In New York City, you can rent a car or your driving school might provide one.

However, the car must comply with the legal requirements for a driving test vehicle in NY. Not every car is suitable for the driving test in NYC. The vehicle you bring is evaluated before your test begins.

The DMV examiner has the authority to cancel the test if they are not satisfied with the car’s compliance with New York regulations.

The checklist below covers every requirement that could disqualify your car, even if you have excellent driving skills.

The examiner looks at the car before the test starts, and a car that does not meet DMV rules can cost you your test date. Check each item a few days before your test.

Who Comes With You

If a licensed driver drives you to the test site, that driver must be over 18. If you drive there yourself on your permit, your accompanying driver must be over 21. Either way, that person must carry a physical license that is valid for the car. Mobile ID is not accepted, and no other passengers may come along.
