Where the Dugdale Test Site Is

The DMV's official Dugdale auto test site page gives the location as Dugdale St and Riga St, Staten Island, NY 10306. The line-up is on Dugdale Street between Riga Street and Mill Road, facing Riga Street. Like other New York City test sites, it is a spot on a public street, not a building, so decide ahead of time where your accompanying driver will park and wait.

The same street location is also listed as the Dugdale motorcycle test site. If you are taking a car (Class D) test, make sure your appointment says Dugdale Auto. The DMV page also gives turn-by-turn directions from the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, which is helpful if your accompanying driver is coming from Brooklyn.

Dugdale is one of six active auto test sites on Staten Island in the DMV's road test location finder. Each one lines up in a different place:

Staten Island auto test site ZIP code Where the DMV says to line up
Dugdale 10306 Dugdale St between Riga St and Mill Rd, facing Riga St
Father Capodanno 10306 Father Capodanno Blvd, north side, at Lincoln Ave
Fox Hills 10301 North side of Mosel Ave, facing Pierce St
Lenevar 10309 Lenevar Ave between Lamont Ave and Edgegrove Ave
Snug Harbor 10301 Richmond Terrace and Snug Harbor Rd
Staten Island 2 10303 Grandview Ave between Forest Ave and Netherland Ave
Same ZIP, different site: Dugdale and Father Capodanno are both in ZIP code 10306. Read the site name on your appointment confirmation, not just the ZIP code, before you set your map. Our guide to road test sites in Staten Island covers all six sites, and our Fox Hills road test guide covers the north shore site.

You can book a road test at any site in the state, so you do not have to test near home. The DMV says the earliest dates are usually 3 to 5 weeks away, and up to 10 weeks during summer and school breaks, and tests are almost always on weekdays. If Dugdale dates are far out, the scheduling system may offer a nearby site. Our guide on how to schedule your road test in New York walks through booking.

Practice rules near test sites: The DMV says practice driving is not allowed at New York State test sites, and the learner permit restrictions bar permit holders from driving in a DMV road test area or on any street within a park in New York City. Practice on other Staten Island streets with a supervising driver who is 21 or older and holds a valid license for the car.

Getting to Dugdale With a Learner Permit

You may be coming from elsewhere on Staten Island or from Brooklyn. Either trip is fine, as long as the right person is driving each part of it.

The learner permit restrictions say a permit holder may not drive on any bridge or tunnel run by the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority, and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge is one of them. If you are coming from Brooklyn, your accompanying driver must drive across the bridge. Our post on driving over the Verrazzano with a learner permit explains that rule.

The person who comes with you must be over 18 if they drive you to the site, or over 21 if you drive there yourself. In both cases they need a physical license that is valid for the test car. Our guide on who can supervise a learner driver in NYC covers the rules for practice drives and test day.

Drive Rite Instructor Tip: Use the few minutes in line to get the car ready, not to read your notes. Set your seat, headrest and all three mirrors, and find the controls for the lights, wipers, defroster and hazard lights, so you are not looking for them after the examiner gets in. Then take a slow breath and picture your first move: signal, check the mirror, turn your head to look at the blind spot, and pull away smoothly.

What to Bring to Your Dugdale Road Test

A missing document or a car that does not qualify can end your test before it starts. This checklist follows the DMV's Schedule and Take a Road Test page.

What to bring Who needs it Details
Physical photo learner permit Every test taker A Mobile ID on your phone is not accepted for you or your accompanying driver.
Pre-Licensing Course Certificate (MV-278) Every test taker who took the 5-hour course Bring the original. Copies are not accepted.
Certification of Supervised Driving (MV-262) Test takers under 18 Completed by a parent or guardian, and given to the examiner each time you test.
Glasses or contact lenses Anyone whose permit says corrective lenses are required Wear them for the whole test.
An accompanying driver Every test taker Over 18 if they drive you to the site, or over 21 if you drive there, with a physical license that is valid for the test car.
A qualifying car Every test taker Valid registration, insurance and inspection, two permanent license plates, in working order and clean. In-transit permits are not allowed.

If you took a high school or college driver education course, you will have the MV-285 certificate instead of the MV-278, so check the DMV page above for what to bring. Using a rental car? The MV-262 form says to bring the rental agreement and written permission to use the car for the road test. Our post on using a rental car for your road test explains more, and our guide to road test car requirements in New York covers the car rules.

Your Dugdale Test Day in 6 Steps

Once your papers and car are sorted, test day comes down to timing. Work through these six steps, starting a few days before your appointment.

  1. Practice Away From Test Sites. Practice is not allowed at test sites, so use other Staten Island streets with your supervising driver. Work on turns, full stops, lane changes, parallel parking and the 3-point turn, and practice around parked cars and driveways, which you will see on many residential streets.
  2. Check for Cancellations. Weather or road construction can cancel, reschedule or move a test. Check the DMV's cancellations, closings and delays page before you leave home, and again if the weather changes.
  3. Pack One Document Folder. The night before, put your permit, your original MV-278, your MV-262 if you are under 18, and the car's registration and insurance papers in one folder that stays in the car.
  4. Arrive 15 Minutes Early. Arrive up to 15 minutes before your test time and join the line on Dugdale Street, facing Riga Street. If you are late, the examiner may not be able to test you, and you will need to reschedule. Our guide on what happens if you are late for or miss your road test explains what to do next.
  5. Drive the Test Calmly. The examiner takes pictures of you, your documents, your permit and the car before the test. Then drive the way you practiced: signal every move, check your mirrors and blind spots, keep a safe distance and follow each instruction.
  6. Check Results After 6 p.m. The examiner will tell you how to check your result online. Results are posted after 6 p.m. on the day of your test.

Late fall brings a few extra things to plan for.

Testing at Dugdale in late October and November: Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2026, according to NIST and NYC311. Clocks go back one hour, so it gets dark about an hour earlier by the clock. In its October 2025 Dusk and Darkness announcement, NYC DOT warned that the hours around sunset are the most dangerous of the year for pedestrians, so practice drives after work or school need headlights on early and extra care at crosswalks. The DMV notes that not every road test location has a shelter, and the Dugdale line-up is on the street, so dress for the weather. Wet leaves can be slippery and can cover lane markings, and cold mornings fog the windows, so clear all the glass before your test begins.

Where Drivers Lose Points

Examiners use the same DMV Class D scoring summary at every site, including Dugdale. The table below groups some of the most common errors on that summary and points to the Driver's Manual chapter that explains each one.

Error category Examples from the DMV scoring summary Driver's Manual chapter
Leaving the curb Not checking the blind spot, using mirrors only, or not signaling when pulling away Chapters 6 and 7
Turns and intersections Turning too wide or too short, or not stopping near the center of the intersection while waiting to turn left Chapters 4 and 5
Parking and the 3-point turn Parking too far from the curb, or needing too many moves to finish the park or the turn Chapters 5 and 7
Driving in traffic Following too closely, not yielding to pedestrians, or not anticipating the actions of pedestrians and other traffic Chapters 4, 8 and 11
Vehicle control Braking too late or too hard, or poor steering control Not tied to one chapter, so build it through practice with a supervising driver or instructor

Most of these are habits, not gaps in knowledge. Ask your supervising driver to point out every skipped head turn and every late signal during practice, and repeat each item until you do it without thinking. By the time you line up on Dugdale Street, the habits should already be there.

After the Test: Pass or Fail

Your next steps depend on the result.

If you pass, an interim license that lets you drive will be available online. Carry it with your photo learner permit until your photo license arrives in the mail, in about 2 weeks. Every new driver also starts a 6-month probationary period. During that time, a conviction for speeding, reckless driving, following too closely, using a phone or other portable device while driving, taking part in a speed contest, or any 2 other moving violations leads to a 60-day suspension. Drivers under 18 with a junior license must also follow the junior driver restrictions. Our guide on what to do after you pass your NY road test has more detail.

If you do not pass, your learner permit stays valid until it expires, and you must wait at least 14 days before you test again. New York State's road test page says the application fee you paid for your permit covers two road tests. If you do not pass either one, you must buy two more road tests for $10 before you can book again. Our guide on what happens if you fail your road test in New York explains how to use those 14 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where exactly is the Dugdale road test site?

The DMV lists the Dugdale auto site at Dugdale St and Riga St, Staten Island, NY 10306. You line up on Dugdale Street between Riga Street and Mill Road, facing Riga Street.

Is Dugdale the only road test site in the 10306 ZIP code?

No. The DMV also lists Father Capodanno as an auto test site in Staten Island, NY 10306. Check the site name on your appointment confirmation so you go to the right place.

Does Dugdale give motorcycle road tests too?

Yes. The DMV lists both a Dugdale auto site and a Dugdale motorcycle site at the same street location. If you are taking a car test, your appointment should say Dugdale Auto.

Can I practice at the Dugdale road test site before my test?

No. The DMV says practice driving is not allowed at New York State test sites, and permit holders may not drive in a DMV road test area. Practice on other Staten Island streets instead.

Is Dugdale an easy or a hard road test site?

The DMV does not rate test sites, and examiners use the same scoring summary at every site. Your result depends on how you handle the items on that sheet, such as blind-spot checks, turns, parking and yielding to pedestrians.

Can I drive over the Verrazzano to my Dugdale road test with a permit?

No. Permit holders may not drive on bridges or tunnels under the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority, which includes the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. Your accompanying driver must drive that part of the trip.

What if my test is canceled because of bad weather?

Weather or road construction can cancel, reschedule or move a test, so check the DMV cancellations page before you leave. You can also schedule, reschedule or cancel a road test with the DMV by phone at 1-518-402-2100.

When will I get my Dugdale road test result?

Results are posted online after 6 p.m. on the day of your test. The examiner will tell you how to check them.
