If you passed your New York road test in NYC, download an interim license online and keep it with your photo learner permit so you can drive right away. Your photo license arrives in about two weeks. Every new driver serves a six-month probation, and under-18 Class DJ drivers still cannot drive in the five boroughs.

What Changes the Moment You Pass
The day you pass, your status flips from permit holder to licensed driver. That matters in NYC because many of the places a learner permit bans become available once you hold a Class D license. According to the DMV's learner permit restrictions, permit holders cannot drive on any street inside a New York City park, on any Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority bridge or tunnel, or in a DMV road test area. Those permit bans do not apply to a licensed Class D driver. You still have to follow every other traffic law, and the six-month probation described below applies to every new driver.
October in NYC: Fall sunsets come early. By mid-October, dusk arrives around 6:15 p.m. in Brooklyn and Queens, and clocks fall back later in the month. That is when pedestrians, cyclists and delivery bikes are hardest to see. October is also Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month. On October 5, 2026, the NY DMV reminded drivers to watch for people in crosswalks and to avoid phone distractions. Read the
DMV's October 5, 2026 press release for the full tip list.
6 Steps After You Pass Your NY Road Test
Use this checklist the evening of your test and through the first weeks with your new license. The six steps below match the panels in the infographic.
- Check your results after 6 p.m. The examiner will tell you how to get your results. Visit roadtestresults.nyrtsscheduler.com after 6 p.m. on the day of your test. You will need the Client Identification Number, document number, date of birth and ZIP code on file with the DMV. For a longer walkthrough of the results page, see our guide on checking your DMV road test results in New York.
- Download your interim license and keep it with your photo permit. If you passed, an interim license that allows you to drive is available online. Print or save it and keep it with your photo learner permit until the photo license arrives. The DMV's Schedule and Take a Road Test page is the official source for this step.
- Know your 6-month probation rules. Drivers of all ages enter a six-month probationary period after they pass (or after a revoked license is restored). During that period, a conviction for speeding, participating in a speed contest, reckless driving, following too closely, using a mobile telephone, using a portable electronic device, or any two other moving violations leads to a 60-day suspension. Details are on the DMV's New Driver Restrictions page.
- If you are under 18, follow junior-license rules. A Class DJ or MJ junior license cannot be used to drive within the five boroughs of New York City under any circumstances. Upstate and Long Island have their own daytime and nighttime rules. The exception is a 17-year-old who completed an approved driver education course, submitted the MV-285, and received a Class D adult license. See the Graduated License Law and our MV-285 guide.
- Wait for your photo license in the mail (about 2 weeks). The DMV mails your photo driver license in about two weeks. Keep driving with the interim license and photo permit until it arrives. If it does not show up on time, contact the DMV through the channels listed on the road test page rather than guessing next steps.
- Build safe habits as a new NYC driver. The first months of licensed driving are when bad habits stick or good ones form. Plan calm practice on familiar Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan or Staten Island streets before you add highways. When you are ready, Drive Rite's License Holder Track is built for newly licensed drivers. The Highway Mastery Program is an advanced option that comes after that track, not instead of it.
Step 3 is where most new drivers get surprised, so the table below spells out the probation timeline and what triggers a suspension or revocation.
| Probation stage |
What triggers trouble |
What the DMV does |
| First 6 months after you pass |
Speeding, speed contest, reckless driving, following too closely, mobile phone, portable electronic device, or any 2 other moving violations |
60-day suspension |
| After that suspension ends |
You enter a second 6-month probation |
Same violation list applies again |
| During the second probation |
One of the listed violations, or any 2 other moving violations |
Revocation for at least 6 months, then another 6-month probation when the revocation ends |
Tip for new NYC drivers: Phone use is on the probation list. Keep the phone in a bag or mount it before you pull away from the curb. That one habit protects both your probation and the pedestrians the DMV is highlighting this October.
Junior Licenses and Driving in the Five Boroughs
If you are under 18, passing the road test does not automatically mean you can drive everywhere in New York City. The Graduated License Law is clear: a Class DJ or MJ junior license cannot be used within the five boroughs under any circumstances. Teens who live in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx or Staten Island and want to drive locally usually wait until 18 for a Class D, or complete an approved high school or college driver education course at 17, submit the MV-285, and upgrade to a Class D adult license.
Upstate New York and Long Island have separate daytime and nighttime rules for junior license holders, including passenger limits and who may supervise after 9 p.m. Those rules are listed on the same Graduated License Law page linked above. Do not rely on permit-era habits. Our guide to driving with a learner's permit in NYC covers the old rules so you can see what no longer applies once you are licensed.
Your First Months as a Licensed NYC Driver
Once the interim license is in your pocket, the next challenge is confidence on real NYC streets. Start on familiar neighborhood routes, practice TBTA bridges and tunnels only when you are ready, and add highways after you can handle midtown and borough traffic without freezing. Early sunsets and wet October leaves make stopping distances longer, so leave more space behind delivery vans and buses.
Drive Rite's License Holder Track is the next step for drivers who just passed. It focuses on the skills newly licensed drivers still need in the five boroughs. If you later want highway work, the Highway Mastery Program is built on top of that track. Prefer linking the service pages for current packages rather than memorizing prices, because rates vary by location.
For the full path from permit to license, our NYC driver's license step-by-step guide covers practice hours, the 5-hour course and scheduling. Still have questions? The answers below cover the ones we hear most often after a pass.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I drive right after I pass my NY road test?

How long is the new-driver probation in New York?
Six months after you pass your road test, or after a revoked license is restored. A second six-month probation starts if your license is suspended during the first period.
What violations suspend a probationary license?
During the probation period, a conviction for speeding, participating in a speed contest, reckless driving, following too closely, using a mobile telephone, using a portable electronic device, or any two other moving violations leads to a 60-day suspension.
Can a Class DJ junior license drive in New York City?
No. A Class DJ or MJ junior license cannot be used within the five boroughs under any circumstances. A 17-year-old with an approved MV-285 who receives a Class D adult license may drive unrestricted anywhere in New York State.
