How to Schedule Your NY DMV Road Test (2026)

To schedule a New York DMV road test, book online or call 1-518-402-2100. You need a valid learner permit, an original MV-278 (5-hour course) or MV-285 (driver ed) certificate, the ZIP code where you want to test, and one unused road test. If you are under 18, you must hold your permit at least 6 months first.

This guide covers what you need, how to book, what to bring on test day and how to find an earlier date.

What You Need to Schedule, at a Glance

You need Details
A valid NY learner permit The scheduler asks for the DMV ID number printed on it
An MV-278 or MV-285 Original and unexpired. The 5-hour certificate (MV-278) is valid for 1 year, a driver ed certificate (MV-285) for 2 years. If you took the online 5-hour course (18 and older only), the school reports it to the DMV and you get no paper certificate
A ZIP code Where you want to take the test. You can test anywhere in the state, not just where you live
At least one unused road test Your permit fee includes two road tests. If you fail both, two more cost $10
Under 18 only At least 6 months since your permit was issued, plus 50 hours of supervised practice (15 after sunset) logged on form MV-262

Step 1. Check That You Are Ready to Book

Every new driver must finish the 5-hour course (Pre-Licensing Course) or a 48-hour high school or college driver education course before the road test. Not sure which one you have? See our guide to the MV-285. If you are under 18, you must also wait at least 6 months from the date you got your learner permit, and finish at least 50 hours of supervised practice, including 15 hours after sunset. A parent or guardian signs that practice log on the Certification of Supervised Driving (MV-262), and you hand it to the examiner each time you test.

Step 2. Book Online or by Phone

  1. Go to the DMV road test scheduler from the DMV Schedule and Take a Road Test page.
  2. Enter the DMV ID number from your learner permit and your certificate details, then log on.
  3. Enter the ZIP code where you want to test. The system shows the earliest dates and times at sites near that ZIP code.
  4. Pick a date and time and keep the confirmation (screenshot it or write it down).

Prefer the phone? Call 1-518-402-2100 to schedule, reschedule or cancel. The DMV call center hours are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

How long is the wait? The DMV says the earliest date is usually 3 to 5 weeks away, and up to 10 weeks during summer and school breaks. There are no waiting lists, and tests are almost always on weekdays.

Step 3 (Optional). Book Through Drive Rite Academy

If you would rather not handle the booking and the car yourself, our Road Test Services team can book the appointment, and the road test package includes the car. Current prices, the same in every NYC location:

Service Price
Regular road test appointment $25
Rush road test appointment $100
Super Rush road test appointment $150
Regular road test and car $125
Rush road test and car $250
Super Rush road test and car (Brooklyn only) $350

Need only a car for a test you already booked? Call the Drive Rite CSR team for the price at your test site.

Step 4. What to Bring on Test Day

Arrive up to 15 minutes early. If you are late, the examiner may not be able to test you and you will have to reschedule. Bring:

  • Your physical photo learner permit (and your glasses or contacts if your permit says you need them)
  • Your original MV-278 or MV-285 certificate (copies are not accepted). If you took the online 5-hour course, there is no paper certificate to bring
  • Form MV-262, if you are under 18
  • A supervising driver with a physical license valid for the test car: age 21 or older if you drive to the site, or 18 or older if they drive you there. A mobile ID is not accepted
  • A car with valid registration, insurance and inspection and permanent license plates (no in-transit permits), that works properly and is clean. See our test car requirements

Only the accompanying driver can come along, with no other passengers. Bad weather or road work can cancel or move a test, so check before you leave. To know what the examiner watches for, read how the road test is scored.

Tips for Finding an Earlier Date

  • Try more than one ZIP code. You do not have to test in your own county or borough.
  • Check the scheduler again later. The DMV keeps no waiting list, so an open slot goes to whoever books it first.
  • Have your permit and certificate details ready before you log on.
  • Remember the timing rules: the 6-month wait for under-18 drivers, and a 14-day wait before a retest.
  • Pick a time of day that suits you, not just the first open slot. See the best time to take a road test.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I need to hold my permit before the road test?

If you are under 18, at least 6 months from the date your permit was issued. The DMV lists no waiting period for drivers 18 and older, but everyone must finish the 5-hour course or driver ed first.

How much does the road test cost?

Your learner permit fee includes two road tests. If you do not pass either, two more tests cost $10.

How far out are road test appointments?

Usually 3 to 5 weeks, and up to 10 weeks at peak times like summer and school breaks.

Can I use my own car?

Yes, if it has valid registration, insurance and inspection, permanent plates, works properly and is clean. If you do not have one, Road Test Services includes a car.

When do I get my results?

The examiner tells you how to check online. Results are posted after 6 p.m. on the day of your test. See how to check your road test results.

What if I fail?

Your permit stays valid until it expires. You must wait at least 14 days to retest, and after two failed tests you pay $10 for two more.

Ready to Book

Booking the road test is quick once your permit, certificate and practice hours are in order. Book early, keep your confirmation, and use the weeks before the test to practice the skills the examiner scores. Once you pass, here is what happens after you pass.
