How to Avoid Parking Tickets in NYC (2026)

To avoid parking tickets in New York City, read every sign on the block before you leave the car, know No Parking vs No Standing vs No Stopping, never double-park, stay 15 feet from a fire hydrant, and learn alternate-side (street cleaning) rules. The posted times apply for the full period, even after a street sweeper passes.

This guide covers ASP for new drivers, statewide no-park rules, meters and common NYC fines.

Alternate-Side Parking for New Drivers

Alternate-side parking (ASP) signs show a "P" with a broom. They tell you which side of the street is off-limits on which days and hours so the City can clean.

  • You cannot park on the posted side during the posted hours.
  • The rule lasts for the entire posted period, even if a sweeper has already gone by.
  • There is a 5-minute grace period after the posted end time. Tickets cannot be issued during that grace window.
  • ASP is suspended on listed legal and religious holidays, and sometimes for weather or emergencies. Check NYC 311 or Notify NYC before you rely on a suspension.
  • When ASP is suspended, other parking signs and time limits still apply.
  • On Sundays, ASP is not in effect and you do not have to pay parking meters (other rules still apply).

No Parking, No Standing, No Stopping

From the NY Driver's Manual, Chapter 7: Parallel Parking:

Sign What you may do
No Parking Temporary stop to load or unload merchandise or passengers
No Standing Temporary stop to load or unload passengers only; the driver may not leave the vehicle
No Stopping Stop only to obey a sign, signal or officer, or to avoid a conflict with other vehicles

Where You Cannot Park in New York

You cannot park, stop or stand (among other places): within 15 feet of a fire hydrant (unless a licensed driver stays in the car ready to move it), on the roadside of a parked vehicle (double parking), on a sidewalk or in a crosswalk, in an intersection unless signs or meters allow it, on railroad tracks, or on a bridge or in a tunnel.

Parking or standing is also not allowed in front of a driveway, within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection, within 30 feet of a traffic light, STOP or YIELD sign, within 20 feet of a fire-station driveway (75 feet on the opposite side), along a cut curb made for sidewalk access, or within 50 feet of a railroad crossing.

In New York City, double parking passenger vehicles is illegal at all times, including during street cleaning.

Meters, Apps and Garages

Pay before you walk away. NYC gives a 5-minute grace period on parking meter receipts (before purchase and after expiration). A broken or missing meter is not unlimited free parking; do not stay longer than the maximum time that would have applied. Set a phone reminder if you are on a short meter.

Pre-booking a garage can be safer than circling for a curb spot when you are new to a neighborhood. Compare prices and read the garage rules (overnight, height, EV) before you reserve. If you are still learning to park under pressure, practice parallel parking for the NY road test and see places to practice in NYC.

FAQs About Parking Tickets in NYC

How much does a parking ticket cost in NYC?

Common examples from the NYC Department of Finance table: street cleaning (code 21) $65, fire hydrant (code 40) $115, meter overtime (codes 37-38) $35 to $65 depending on area, double parking (code 46) $115. Amounts include the state surcharge where listed. See the full NYC parking violation codes and fines.

Can I get a ticket while sitting in my car?

Yes. An occupied, illegally parked vehicle can still be ticketed.

What if I do not pay?

Pay or dispute by the deadline on the ticket. Late penalties can grow, and unpaid tickets can lead to enforcement such as a boot or tow.

Do parking tickets go on my driving record?

Ordinary NYC parking tickets are parking violations, not moving violations, so they do not add DMV license points the way speeding or failing to stop does. Unpaid tickets can still create collection and registration headaches.

Is there a grace period?

Yes for ASP (5 minutes after the posted end time) and for many parking meters (5 minutes on the receipt). Do not treat grace periods as free parking before the rule starts.

Does double parking count during street cleaning?

Yes. Double parking passenger vehicles is illegal at all times in NYC, including during street cleaning.

Final Thoughts

Read the signs, know ASP, and leave space at hydrants and crosswalks. If you are still learning to park under pressure, practice with an instructor before your road test. For right-of-way and crosswalks, see when to yield the right of way. Compare options on driving packages, or see Road Test Services when you are ready to book the test and the car.
