Where the Kissena Park Test Site Is
The DMV's road test location finder lists Kissena Park as an active auto test site in Flushing, with the line-up on 164th Street between Booth Memorial Avenue and Underhill Avenue. The test starts from that line on a residential street, so plan how you will get there and where your accompanying driver will meet you before the day of the test.
Kissena Park is one of several active auto test sites in Queens. Fresh Meadows, Cunningham Park, Jamaica and Whitestone are some of the others. You do not have to test in the borough where you live, because the DMV lets you book any road test site in the state. If Kissena Park dates are far out, the scheduling system may offer an earlier date at a nearby site.
Before you practice nearby: The DMV says practice driving is not allowed at New York State test sites. The
learner permit restrictions also bar permit holders from driving in a DMV road test area and on any street within a park in New York City. Do your supervised practice on other Queens streets with a supervising driver who is 21 or older and holds a valid license for the car.
What to Bring to Your Road Test
Once you know where you are going, the next thing to get right is your paperwork. Most test-day problems come from a missing document or a car that does not qualify, and the examiner cannot test you without them. This checklist follows the DMV's Schedule and Take a Road Test page.
| What to bring |
Who needs it |
Details |
| Physical photo learner permit |
Every test taker |
A Mobile ID on your phone is not accepted for you or your accompanying driver. |
| Pre-Licensing Course Certificate (MV-278) |
Every test taker who took the 5-hour course |
Bring the original. Copies are not accepted. |
| Certification of Supervised Driving (MV-262) |
Test takers under 18 |
Completed and signed by a parent or guardian, and given to the examiner each time you test. |
| Glasses or contact lenses |
Anyone whose permit says corrective lenses are required |
Wear them for the whole test. |
| An accompanying driver |
Every test taker |
The driver must be over 18 if they drive you to the site, or over 21 if you drive there. They need a physical license that is valid for the test car. |
| A qualifying car |
Every test taker |
Valid registration, insurance and inspection, two permanent license plates, in working order and clean. In-transit permits are not allowed. |
Students who finished a high school or college driver education course receive the MV-285 certificate instead of the MV-278. If that is you, check the DMV page above for what to bring. For a closer look at the car rules, see our guide to road test car requirements in New York.
Your Test Day in 6 Steps
With your documents and car ready, test day itself is mostly about timing. Follow these six steps in order, starting a few days before your appointment.
- Practice away from the test site. Use quiet residential streets elsewhere in Queens to practice turns, stops and parallel parking with your supervising driver, since practice is not allowed at test sites.
- Check for cancellations. Tests can be canceled, rescheduled or moved because of bad weather or road construction. Check the DMV's cancellations, closings and delays page before you leave home.
- Pack your documents. The night before, put your permit, your original MV-278, your MV-262 if you are under 18, and the car's papers in one folder.
- Arrive 15 minutes early. Arrive up to 15 minutes before your test time and join the line on 164th Street facing Underhill Avenue. If you are late, the examiner may not be able to test you, and you will have to reschedule.
- Drive the test calmly. Before the test, the examiner takes pictures of you, your documents, your permit and the car. Then drive the way you practiced, signal every move, check your mirrors and blind spots, and follow each instruction.
- Check your results after 6 p.m. The examiner will tell you how to get your result online. Results are posted after 6 p.m. on the day of your test.
October in Queens: The DMV notes that not all road test locations have a shelter, and the Kissena Park line-up is outdoors on 164th Street. Fall mornings in Queens can be cold, windy or wet, so dress for the weather and leave the car's windows clear of fog and leaves before your test starts. If the weather is bad, check the cancellations page again right before you leave.
Where Drivers Lose Points
Step 5 is where the result is decided, so it helps to know what the examiner is scoring. The DMV publishes a Class D scoring summary that lists the errors examiners mark. The scoring is the same at every site, including Kissena Park. The table below groups some of the most common items and shows which chapter of the Driver's Manual explains each one.
| Error category |
Examples from the DMV scoring summary |
Driver's Manual chapter |
| Leaving the curb |
Not checking the blind spot, using mirrors only, or not signaling when pulling away |
Chapters 6 and 7 |
| Turns and intersections |
Turning too wide or too short, or not stopping near the center of the intersection while waiting to turn left |
Chapters 4 and 5 |
| Parking and the 3-point turn |
Parking too far from the curb, or needing too many moves to finish the park or the turn |
Chapters 5 and 7 |
| Driving in traffic |
Following too closely, not yielding to pedestrians, or driving too slowly for traffic |
Chapters 4, 8 and 11 |
| Vehicle control |
Braking too late or too hard, or poor steering control |
Not tied to one chapter, so build it through practice with a supervising driver or instructor |
Tip: Many of these errors come from habits rather than knowledge, such as skipping the head turn before pulling away from the curb. Practice each item in the table until it is automatic, and ask your supervising driver or instructor to call out every missed blind-spot check during practice drives.
After the Test: Pass or Fail
Once your result is posted, your next steps depend on whether you passed. Either way, the process is clear.
If you pass, an interim license that lets you drive will be available online. Keep it with your photo learner permit until your photo license arrives in the mail, in about 2 weeks. Every new driver also starts a 6-month probationary period. During that time, a conviction for speeding, reckless driving, following too closely, using a phone or other portable device while driving, taking part in a speed contest, or any 2 other moving violations leads to a 60-day suspension. Drivers under 18 with a junior license must also follow the junior driver restrictions.
If you do not pass, your learner permit stays valid until its expiration date, and you must wait at least 14 days before you test again. According to New York State's road test page, the application fee you paid for your permit covers two road tests. If you do not pass either one, you must buy two more road tests for $10 before you can book again. Our guide on what happens if you fail your road test in New York explains how to use those 14 days well.
