Graphic by Drive Rite Academy. Not a real permit.
Yes. A New York learner permit expires. The DMV says permits are valid for about 5 years, and the exact date depends on your date of birth and the day you applied. For new drivers in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island, the bigger surprise is that your pre-licensing course certificate (MV-278) runs on a much shorter clock: 1 year.

This guide explains how long each document lasts, what you need to renew a permit, and what carries over when you do. We checked every rule on dmv.ny.gov, including the DMV's ID-44 application guide and its pre-licensing course page, on October 30, 2026.
Start with the key facts.

How Long Is a NY Learner Permit Valid?
About 5 years. The DMV's learner permit page says the exact expiration date depends on your date of birth and the date you apply, so two people who got permits the same week can have different dates. The date is printed on the permit itself, so that is the first place to look.
A permit that is still valid keeps working no matter how many road tests you take. The DMV's road test page says that if you fail a road test, your learner permit remains valid until its expiration date.
Drive Rite Instructor Tip: Put your permit's expiration date and your MV-278 issue date in your phone calendar the day you get each one. Those two dates decide when you can schedule a road test, and they are easy to forget.
What Do You Need to Renew a Learner Permit?
The DMV's ID-44 guide lists one condition for renewing a Class D learner permit: you must have passed a written test within the last 2 years. If your last permit test was longer ago than that, plan to take the written test again.
The same form says a New York driver license, permit or non-driver ID counts as a 6-point proof of name if it is current or has not been expired for more than 2 years. That can make your documents easier to gather if you act soon after the permit expires.
Note: Renewal rules can change, and your situation may differ. Use the DMV's online document guide or call the DMV before your visit, and bring original documents or copies certified by the agency that issued them, as the ID-44 requires.
If you need to retake the written test, our guide on what to do after a failed permit test covers how to study for it.
What Carries Over and What Starts Fresh?
Each document runs on its own clock, so renewing your permit does not reset the others. Here is how they compare.
| Document | How long it lasts | What to know |
|---|
| Learner permit | About 5 years | Needed to take the pre-licensing course, schedule a road test and take it |
| Pre-licensing certificate (MV-278) | 1 year from issue | Not renewable. If it expires, you must take the course again |
| Online pre-licensing course | No paper certificate | The provider reports completion to the DMV, usually within 48 hours |
| Driver education certificate (MV-285) | 2 years | Can be used in place of the MV-278 to schedule a road test |
| Supervised driving form (MV-262) | Turned in at each road test | Required if you are under 18 |
The MV-278 is the one that catches people out. The DMV's pre-licensing course page says your certificate must be valid on the day you make your road test appointment. If it expires, you must complete the course again. The DMV's student manual adds that the certificate is not renewable, and that a lost one can be replaced by the school you attended.
If you are under 18, the 50-hour log is a separate requirement. Our MV-262 practice log guide explains it.
Drive Rite Instructor Tip: Book your 5-hour course when you are close to road-test ready, not the week you get your permit. A certificate that sits unused for a year has to be earned again.
How to Stay Road-Test Ready in 6 Steps
Follow these steps from the day you get your permit to test day.
- Find the date. Check the expiration date printed on your permit and note it.
- Plan ahead. Keep track of the date so your permit is valid when you take the course and book the test.
- Know the 2-year test rule. To renew, the DMV says you must have passed a written test within the last 2 years.
- Check your MV-278. It lasts 1 year from issue and must be valid on the day you book your road test.
- Keep the 6-month wait in mind. If you are under 18, the DMV says you must wait at least 6 months from the date you got your permit to schedule a road test.
- Book the road test on a valid permit. The DMV requires a valid New York State learner permit to schedule, and you must bring the physical permit to the test.
Permit rules about where you can drive still apply the whole time. Our guide to driving with a learner permit in NYC covers them.
