How to Change Your Address on a NY Driver's License (2026)

To change your address on a NY driver's license, you must tell the DMV within 10 days of moving. You can do it online through an NY.gov ID, at a DMV office with form MV-232, or by mail with an MV-232 and a copy of your license. You do not need a new card: the DMV says you may write your new address on the back of your license.

This guide covers moving within New York, moving here from another state and moving away.

How to Change Your Address Online (NY.gov ID)

Sign in to your NY.gov ID, or create one, to change your address online. To create an account you need your Client ID number, the document number from your latest photo document, your date of birth, the state and ZIP code on your DMV record and the last 4 digits of your Social Security number. You can also use the transaction without an NY.gov ID by entering the same information (source: NY DMV, Change Your Address).

How to Change Your Address at a DMV Office (MV-232)

Bring a completed Address Change form (MV-232) and a valid NYS license, permit or non-driver ID, or 6 points of proof of identity. Book a DMV appointment first.

By mail

Mail the completed MV-232 with a copy (front and back) of your current NYS license, permit, non-driver ID or military ID to the License Production Bureau address on the DMV page. Without a current valid ID you must go to a DMV office.

Do You Need a New License Card?

No. The DMV recommends it but does not require it. You may write your new address on the back of your license, permit or non-driver ID. If you want a new card, the fee is listed on the MV-232 form.

Moving to New York From Another State

New residents exchange an out-of-state license at a DMV office. Use the DMV Document Guide to check what to bring. If you never held a license, you start as a new driver with a learner permit and the 5 hour course.

Moving Out of New York

Your new state handles your new license. For any NY vehicle registration, follow the DMV instructions for plates and registration before you move.

Change of Address FAQ

Does changing my address with USPS update the DMV?

No. The DMV says the Postal Service does not notify it, so you must update both.

Does it update my traffic tickets?

No. The DMV says Traffic Violations Bureau ticket addresses and license or registration addresses are updated separately.

How much does it cost?

Changing the address on your record does not require a new card. If you order one, the payment information is on the MV-232 form.

Can I change my address by phone?

The DMV page lists online, in person and by mail. Use one of those.

Should I change my address before renewing?

Yes. The DMV says your address must match its records when you renew. Then you can renew your license after a move. If your license has already expired, see how to renew an expired NY license.

Where can I find a DMV office?

See our guide to DMV appointments across NYC. In Brooklyn, read Brooklyn DMV appointments.
