Expired License FAQ
Can I drive with an expired license in NY?
No. If you are stopped, the DMV lists fines of $25 to $40 within 60 days of expiration and $75 to $300 after 60 days, plus surcharges.
Is there a grace period to renew?
You can still renew up to 2 years after expiration, but that is not a grace period for driving. Your license is not valid while it is expired.
Can I renew an expired license online?
Yes, if you are within 2 years of expiration, meet the online requirements (including a recent eye exam in the DMV Vision Registry) and are keeping your current document type.
What if my license expired more than 2 years ago?
You must apply for an original license: vision test, written test, pre-licensing course and road test.
I am in the military and out of state. What should I do?
Special rules apply to military members. Check the DMV renewal page and our main renewal guide before your license expires.
Can I renew while I am temporarily out of state?
The DMV says a license renewed online will not be forwarded out of state or out of the country, so check the renewal page for the option that fits you.
