Where Is the Starrett City Road Test Site?
The DMV lists the site as Starrett City Auto, and the state's DMV Road Test Sites data gives the line-up spot: Flatlands Avenue between Van Siclen Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue, facing Van Siclen Avenue. That puts it in southeast Brooklyn, near the Belt Parkway. Brooklyn has several active auto test sites in the same state data, including Red Hook, Coney Island, Seaview and Beverly Road. Our guide to Brooklyn road test locations compares them, and our Red Hook road test guide covers that site.
When you book, the DMV scheduling system offers the earliest dates at sites near the ZIP code you enter. The DMV says the earliest date is usually within 3 to 5 weeks, but it can be up to 10 weeks away in summer and school breaks. Tests are almost always on weekdays. Our guide on how to schedule your road test in New York walks through booking step by step.
Before you practice nearby: The DMV says practice driving is not allowed at New York State test sites. The
learner permit restrictions also bar permit holders from driving in a DMV road test area and on any street within a park in New York City. Practice on other Brooklyn streets with a supervising driver who is 21 or older and holds a valid license for the car.
What to Bring to Your Starrett City Road Test
The examiner cannot test you without the right papers and a car that qualifies. This checklist follows the DMV's Schedule and Take a Road Test page.
| What to bring | Who needs it | Details |
|---|
| Physical photo learner permit | Every test taker | A Mobile ID is not accepted for you or your accompanying driver. |
| Pre-Licensing Course Certificate (MV-278) | Test takers who took the 5-hour course | Bring the original. Copies are not accepted. |
| Certification of Supervised Driving (MV-262) | Test takers under 18 | Completed by a parent or guardian. |
| Glasses or contact lenses | Anyone whose permit says corrective lenses are needed | Wear them for the whole test. |
| An accompanying driver | Every test taker | Over 18 if they drive you to the site, or over 21 if you drive there, with a valid license for the car. |
| A qualifying car | Every test taker | Valid registration, insurance and inspection, working properly, clean, and with two permanent plates. In-transit permits are not allowed. |

Your Starrett City Test Day in 6 Steps
With your papers and car ready, here is how the day goes, in order.
- Check closures before you go. Tests can be canceled, rescheduled or moved for bad weather or road work, so check the DMV cancellations, closings and delays page before you leave.
- Pack your documents. Bring your physical photo learner permit, your original MV-278, your MV-262 if you are under 18, and your glasses if you need them.
- Bring a qualifying car. The car needs valid registration, insurance and inspection, two permanent plates, and must work properly.
- Find the line-up spot early. Get to Flatlands Avenue between Van Siclen Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue up to 15 minutes before your time. If you are late, the examiner may not be able to test you.
- Drive calmly and check your mirrors. The examiner takes photos of you, your documents, your permit and the car before the test starts. Then drive the way you practiced, checking mirrors and blind spots.
- Check results after 6 p.m. The examiner tells you how to get your result online. The DMV road test results page says results post after 6 p.m. on test day.
Drive Rite Instructor Tip: The DMV notes that not all road test locations have a shelter, so dress for the weather while you wait. Clocks went back an hour on November 1, and late afternoons now get dark sooner, so plan your trip to Flatlands Avenue with extra time. If snow or rain is in the forecast, our guide on
road tests in bad weather explains what to expect.
Where Drivers Lose Points
The scoring is the same at every NY test site, including Starrett City. The DMV publishes a Class D scoring summary that lists the errors examiners mark. This table groups common ones with the Driver's Manual chapters that explain them.
| Error category | Examples from the DMV scoring summary | Driver's Manual chapter |
|---|
| Leaving the curb | Not checking the blind spot, or not signaling when pulling away | Chapters 6 and 7 |
| Turns and intersections | Turning too wide or too short, or not stopping near the center of the intersection while waiting to turn left | Chapters 4 and 5 |
| Parking and the 3-point turn | Parking too far from the curb, or needing too many moves to finish | Chapters 5 and 7 |
| Driving in traffic | Not yielding to pedestrians or others, or driving too slowly and impeding traffic | Chapter 4 |
| Vehicle control | Braking too late or too hard, or poor steering | Built through supervised practice |
After the Test: Pass or Fail
If you pass, an interim license will be available online. Keep it with your photo learner permit until your photo license arrives by mail, in about 2 weeks. Every new driver starts a 6-month probation period, and a conviction for speeding, reckless driving, following too closely, a speed contest, using a phone or other portable device, or any 2 other moving violations leads to a 60-day suspension. Our guide on what happens after you pass covers the details.
If you do not pass, your learner permit stays valid until it expires, and you must wait at least 14 days to test again. New York State says your permit fee covers two road tests; after two failed tests you must buy two more for $10 before booking again. Our guide on what happens if you fail your road test explains how to use that time.
