How Many Driving Lessons Do I Need in NY? (2026 Guide)

There is no DMV minimum number of driving lessons in New York. How many driving lessons you need depends on your experience: someone who has never driven usually needs a full beginner plan, while a licensed driver from another country may only need a few lessons on NYC rules. If you are under 18, the DMV requires 50 hours of supervised practice, 15 of them after sunset.

This guide shows how to estimate the number of lessons for your situation, what the DMV requires before your road test and how to choose a package.

How Many Driving Lessons Do I Need? The Short Answer

New York does not set a minimum number of driving lessons. The right number depends on where you are starting from. Here is a simple way to match your experience to one of our lesson options:

Where you are now A good place to start
Never driven before A beginner package with 8 to 20 lessons, such as our beginner driving lessons
Some practice with a family member A smaller package or a lesson bundle, then more lessons if your instructor suggests it
Licensed in another country A few refresher lessons for licensed drivers to learn New York rules and city traffic
Licensed, but out of practice Refresher lessons focused on the skills you want to rebuild

Your instructor will tell you honestly after each lesson what still needs work, so you only add lessons you actually need.

What the DMV Requires Before Your Road Test

Before you can take a road test in New York, the DMV requires you to:

  • have a valid New York State learner permit
  • complete the 5-hour pre-licensing course (MV-278 certificate) or a high school or college driver education course (MV-285)
  • if you are under 18, wait at least six months from the date you got your learner permit before you schedule the test
  • if you have a junior learner permit (Class DJ or MJ), complete at least 50 hours of supervised practice driving, including at least 15 hours after sunset, certified on the MV-262 form

Hours driven with a licensed driving school instructor can be certified on the MV-262 as part of the 50 hours. You can take our 5-hour pre-licensing course for $50.

What Changes How Many Lessons You Need

  • Experience: a complete beginner needs more time on the basics of starting, stopping, steering and turning.
  • Practice between lessons: regular supervised practice between lessons helps each lesson build on the last.
  • Comfort in city traffic: NYC streets bring double-parked cars, buses, cyclists and pedestrians, which take time to get used to.
  • Highway driving: if you want to drive on highways, plan time for merging and lane changes. See our highway driving lessons.

Drive Rite Instructor Tip: Practice between lessons with a supervising driver, even for short drives. Each lesson then starts where the last one ended instead of going back over the basics.

How Many Lessons Before the Road Test?

You are ready for the road test when you can drive a full practice route without prompts from your instructor: smooth stops, mirror and shoulder checks, safe turns, parallel parking and calm decisions in traffic. Read what to expect on the NY road test to see what the examiner looks for.

How Many Driving Lessons FAQ

How many driving lessons should I take before my test?

There is no fixed number. Take lessons until you can drive a full practice route safely without prompts. Your instructor will tell you when you are ready.

Is there a minimum number of driving lessons in NY?

No. The DMV does not require a set number of lessons. Drivers with a junior learner permit must complete at least 50 hours of supervised practice, including 15 hours after sunset.

Do supervised practice hours with a parent count?

Yes. A parent or guardian certifies the supervised hours on the MV-262 form, and hours with a licensed driving school instructor can be certified on the same form.

How long is each driving lesson?

We offer 45-minute, 60-minute and 90-minute lessons.

Can a licensed driver from another country take fewer lessons?

Often, yes. Many licensed drivers only need a few refresher lessons to learn New York rules and city traffic.

So, how many driving lessons do you need? As many as it takes to drive safely on your own, and no more. Start with a beginner driving lesson and your instructor will help you plan the rest.
