Before You Arrive: What to Check
The most common reason students are turned away at the test site is missing documentation or a vehicle that fails the pre-test check. Confirm the following the night before your test:
- Your learner permit plastic card (not a paper interim permit — examiners will not accept the paper version)
- Your original MV-278 certificate — if you took the online course, confirm your completion is recorded in your MyDMV account
- If under 18: your completed, signed MV-262 Certification of Supervised Driving
- A vehicle with valid registration, current insurance, and a passing inspection — no warning lights, all signals and lights working
- A licensed driver aged 21 or older who drove you to the site (they must have a physical license — Mobile ID is not accepted)
Note: There are no road test sites in Manhattan. If you live in Manhattan, your test will be scheduled at a site in one of the outer boroughs — typically Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, or the Bronx. This surprises many first-timers; plan your travel time accordingly.
Step-by-Step: What Happens During the Test
- Check in at the test site. Report to the examiner station and present your documents. The examiner will verify your permit, MV-278, and any additional documents required for your age.
- Vehicle inspection. Before you get in the car, the examiner will ask you to demonstrate that the vehicle's lights, signals, brake lights, horn, and windshield wipers are all functional. Know where these controls are in whatever vehicle you're using — a moment of fumbling here is noted.
- Pre-drive check inside the vehicle. Once seated, the examiner will ask you to adjust your mirrors and confirm your seatbelt is on. Do this deliberately and visibly — it shows the examiner you take observation habits seriously from the start.
- The driving test (approximately 10–15 minutes). The examiner will direct you through a series of maneuvers using verbal instructions. You will not receive instructions in advance. Typical maneuvers include: leaving the test site, turns at intersections, stopping at signs and signals, lane changes, and parallel parking. The examiner writes notes on a score sheet throughout.
- Return to the test site. The examiner will direct you back to the starting point. Your driving is assessed until you stop the engine — not just during maneuvers.
- Scoring and result. The examiner tallies points from their score sheet. You receive the score sheet whether you pass or fail. If you pass, you receive a temporary driving permit that functions as your license while your plastic license is mailed. If you fail, the score sheet shows exactly where you lost points.
