The 5-hour pre-licensing course NYCis required for all prospective drivers to take before receiving their license. This class is offered in many locations around the state. While each course may differ in the presentation of the material, the course was designed by the New York Department of Motor Vehicles, so all the material taught in each location's course is identical.

Each pre-licensing course is broken down into four different sections with each section covering a different area pertinent to safe, law-abiding driving. These sections include:

  1. Highway driving
  2. General driving habits and skills
  3. How emotions affect driving
  4. How intoxicating substances affect driving

Additionally, students in the 5-hour pre-licensing class learn:

  • Defensive driving techniques
  • The DMV points system
  • The effect of restraining devices on driving
  • How to act in the event of a collision

Expect the course to take the entire 5 hours as instructors are not permitted to end early. However, you can also expect those hours to go by quickly. Because there's so much material to cover, these courses are usually fast-paced and high-energy.

Many locations offering the 5-hour pre-licensing course in NYC, such as Drive Rite Academy, allow walk-ins with no appointment necessary. However, all course providers require that each student possess a valid New York learner's permit to register and take the course. You will be asked to present this when you sign in and before you pay the course fee. The instructor will then hold onto your learner's permit while the course is taking place. If you do not have your learner's permit with you, you will not be permitted to take the course.

Upon completing the 5-hour pre-licensing course NYC, you will receive a Pre-Licensing Completion Certificate, or Form MV-278, which is required in order to take your road test. Once receiving this certificate, store it in a safe and secure place. You will need the number on this certificate to register for your road test and again when you show up to take the road test you've scheduled. If a former student loses his or her certificate, one can usually be reissued if it hasn't yet expired. Pre-licensing course certificates are valid for a period of one year after being issued.

This pre-licensing course is an essential component of obtaining your license, and it's also extremely helpful tobuilding safe driving skills.
