What Are the Common Questions About the Online 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course?

While the five-hour program is pretty straightforward, clearing up these frequently asked questions ensures you have all the info you need before you sign up and take your test.

Who Can Take the Online 5-Hour Course in New York?

Permit holders aged 16 and up can take our live Zoom class. If you're 18 or older with a plastic photo learner permit, you can also choose the self-paced online course offered through our affiliate partner.

How Long Is the 5-Hour Course Certificate Valid?

Your MV-278 certificate is good for 12 months from the date you complete the course. You must schedule and pass your road test within that year. If it expires, you’ll need to retake the course to ensure you’re up-to-date with current safety standards.

Is the 5-Hour Course Mandatory for New Drivers in New York?

Yes, for most new drivers. New York requires new drivers, and drivers whose license is expired or revoked, to complete a pre-licensing course before they can book a road test. The main exception is a student who holds an MV-285 driver education certificate.

What Is the Difference Between the 5-Hour Course and Defensive Driving?

The 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course covers the fundamental driving laws and safety practices you need to get your license. A defensive driving course, on the other hand, is for licensed drivers and focuses on reducing points on your record, earning insurance discounts, and mastering advanced accident-avoidance techniques.

What Happens If My 5-Hour Course Certificate Expires?

If your MV-278 certificate is no longer valid (more than 12 months old), you’ll need to take the approved five-hour program again to get a new completion record before you can schedule your road test.
