NYC Road Test Locations by Borough: How to Choose (2026)

New York City has about 27 road test sites for cars: 12 in Queens, 6 on Staten Island, 6 in Brooklyn and 3 in the Bronx, with none in Manhattan. You can book a road test at any site in the state, so the best choice is usually a site you can reach easily, at a time you can make, in an area like the one where you practice.

Is There a Road Test Site in Manhattan?

No. The DMV does not list any car road test sites in Manhattan. You can book a road test at any site in New York State, so most Manhattan learners test in a nearby borough. Our guide on how to schedule a road test from Manhattan walks through the steps.

How to Choose the Best Road Test Location for You

  • Travel time: pick a site you can reach easily, so you arrive calm and on time.
  • Test time: choose a date and time you can make without rushing.
  • Traffic you are used to: a site in an area like the one where you practice usually feels more familiar.
  • Practice in similar traffic: the DMV says practice driving is not allowed at New York State road test sites, and permit holders may not drive in a DMV road test area. Practice on other streets with similar traffic instead.

Drive Rite Instructor Tip: Book a lesson the week before your test in traffic like the area around your test site, so busy streets and parked cars feel normal on test day.

How to Book Your Road Test

You book your road test through the DMV once you have your learner permit and your 5-hour course certificate. The DMV says the earliest dates are usually 3 to 5 weeks out, and up to 10 weeks at peak times. You do not need to test in the county where you live. Read how to book a DMV road test for the steps, or see our road test service with a car if you want a car and an earlier appointment.

What to Bring on Test Day

Bring your learner permit, your 5-hour course certificate or driver education certificate, a supervising driver if you bring your own car, and a car that meets the DMV rules. If you are under 18, bring your completed MV-262. The DMV asks you to arrive up to 15 minutes early. See what to bring to your road test for the full list.
