Maximize Your Driving Skills: Master the Five Hour Pre-Licensing Course Online
Updated guide: For the latest, complete details on New York's 5-hour pre-licensing course, see our free 5-hour pre-licensing course guide.
The five hour pre-licensing course is a New York requirement for most new drivers, and you can complete it online. It is different from the Defensive Driving Course: the 5-hour course comes before your road test. Here is how to take it online with Drive Rite Academy and get the most out of it.
Who Needs the Course
New York requires new drivers, and drivers whose license is expired or revoked, to finish a pre-licensing course before they can book a road test. The main exception is a student who holds an MV-285 driver education certificate.
For the full path from permit to license, see our guide to getting a driver's license in New York.
Two Ways to Take It Online
Live Zoom class at Drive Rite Academy (16+): one five-hour session with a live instructor, on a date you book in advance. There's no final exam or quiz; you attend and take part in the full session.
Self-paced online, through our affiliate partner (18+): for permit holders with a plastic photo permit (a temporary paper permit will not work). Start any time and take up to 30 days to finish; your completion is reported to the DMV electronically, and there's no paper certificate.
What You'll Learn
Traffic laws: signs, signals, speed limits, and right-of-way
Defensive driving: spotting hazards early and keeping space around your car
Alcohol and drugs: how they affect judgment and reaction time
Sharing the road: pedestrians, cyclists, trucks, and other drivers

Getting the Most Out of the Class
Use a computer or tablet with a camera and a steady internet connection.
Find a quiet spot where you can stay for the full session.
Take notes on the topics you can practice later with your supervising driver.
After You Finish
After our live Zoom class, Drive Rite Academy issues your paper MV-278 certificate, which you can have mailed to you (expedited shipping available) or pick up at our Brooklyn office. If you take the self-paced course through our affiliate partner, your completion goes to the DMV electronically and there is no paper certificate. The MV-278 is valid for one year from the issue date.
You schedule your road test with the New York DMV, online or by phone. Bring your learner permit and an original, unexpired MV-278 (or MV-285). Practice with a licensed supervising driver, and consider driving lessons before test day. Our road test services include a car for your road test.
