To get your New York driver's license, one of the first steps is completing the DMV five hour class, the pre-licensing course required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) before you can book a road test.

But not all courses are created equal.

At Drive Rite Academy, we make it easy, flexible, and effective. Our live Zoom classes are taught by experienced instructors and open to New York State permit holders aged 16 and older, so you can join from anywhere in the state with an internet connection.

In this guide, we'll break down what the DMV five hour class is, who needs it, what you'll learn, and how to enroll with Drive Rite Academy.

What Is the DMV Five Hour Class?

The DMV five hour class, officially called the New York State Pre-Licensing Course, is a state education requirement for most new drivers before the road test.

It consists of:

• Five hours of instruction in one session, taught live on Zoom at Drive Rite Academy

• Curriculum based on NYS traffic laws, safe driving habits, and risk reduction

• Issuance of the MV-278 certificate required to schedule your road test

Topics Covered:

• Rules of the road and traffic law

• Defensive driving strategies

• Alcohol and drug awareness

• Sharing the road with others

• Avoiding crashes and emergencies

Who Must Take the DMV Five Hour Class?

If you're applying for your first New York driver's license, you're required to take this pre-licensing course before scheduling your road test.

You need the pre-licensing course if you:

• Are age 16 or older

• Have a valid New York State learner's permit

• Have never held a NYS license

This applies to both teens and adults living anywhere in New York State. The main exception is a student who holds an MV-285 driver education certificate.
