Can You Learn to Drive on Your Own in NY? (2026 Guide)

No. In New York, you can't legally drive alone with a learner permit. Every permit holder needs a supervising driver who is 21 or older and licensed for the car, and in New York City a teen with a junior permit can only practice with a parent, guardian or driving instructor, in a car with dual controls. You can study the rules on your own, but behind the wheel you need a supervisor.

This guide explains the permit rules, what you can learn on your own and how a parent compares with an instructor.

The DMV says every permit holder, at any age, must drive with a supervising driver who is 21 or older and has a valid license for the vehicle. You can study the rules on your own, but you cannot practice behind the wheel alone.
