Preparing for your New York driver's license? The 5-hour pre-licensing class is a key step. This guide covers the essentials: who takes the class, what it covers, how to register, how to get ready, and what to do once you finish.
Key Takeaways
-
Most new New York drivers must complete the 5-hour class before booking a road test
-
You need a valid New York learner permit first
-
Drive Rite Academy teaches the class live on Zoom in one session (16+); a self-paced option (18+) is offered through our affiliate partner
-
The MV-278 certificate from our Zoom class is valid for one year
Who Takes the 5-Hour Class
New York requires new drivers, and drivers whose license is expired or revoked, to complete a pre-licensing course before they can book a road test. The main exception is a student who holds an MV-285 driver education certificate.
To take our live Zoom class you need to be 16 or older and hold a valid New York learner permit. The self-paced course is for permit holders aged 18 and up with a plastic photo permit; a temporary paper permit will not work.
What the Class Covers
The course covers New York traffic laws, defensive driving, how alcohol and drugs affect driving, and how to share the road safely with pedestrians, cyclists, and other drivers.
-
Traffic laws: signs, signals, speed limits, and right-of-way
-
Defensive driving: anticipating hazards, keeping space around your car, and staying focused
-
Alcohol and drugs: how they affect judgment and reaction time, and the consequences of impaired driving
-
Sharing the road: pedestrians, cyclists, trucks, and other drivers

-
Find a quiet spot and keep a notebook handy.
-
Take part for the full session; it's the requirement for your certificate.
After You Finish

Your certificate
After our live Zoom class, Drive Rite Academy issues your paper MV-278 certificate, which you can have mailed to you (expedited shipping available) or pick up at our Brooklyn office. If you take the self-paced course through our affiliate partner, your completion is reported to the DMV electronically and there is no paper certificate. The MV-278 is valid for one year from the issue date.
Your road test
You schedule your road test with the New York DMV, online or by phone. You'll need your learner permit and an original, unexpired MV-278 (or MV-285). If you took the self-paced online course, the DMV already has your completion on record.
Practice regularly with a licensed supervising driver, and consider driving lessons with a professional instructor before test day. Our road test services include a car for your road test.
