Looking for a five hour pre-licensing class near you? This guide explains what the class is, who needs it, what you need to enroll, how to take it from wherever you live in New York, how to register, and what to do after you finish.
Understanding the Five Hour Class
Its purpose
The course covers New York traffic laws, defensive driving, how alcohol and drugs affect driving, and how to share the road safely with pedestrians, cyclists, and other drivers. It prepares you for safe behind-the-wheel practice and, later, your road test.
Who needs it
New York requires new drivers, and drivers whose license is expired or revoked, to complete a pre-licensing course before they can book a road test. The main exception is a student who holds an MV-285 driver education certificate.
Eligibility and What You Need to Enroll

-
A valid New York learner permit
-
For our live Zoom class: age 16 or older
-
For the self-paced course through our affiliate partner: age 18 or older with a plastic photo permit (a temporary paper permit will not work)
-
A device with a reliable internet connection, and an email address
Finding a Class Near You

Because the class can be taken online, the closest class may be the one on your own screen. Our live Zoom class lets you join from anywhere in New York State, with class dates listed on our 5-hour course page.
If you'd rather start right away, the self-paced option through our affiliate partner has no session to book. Whichever you choose, make sure the course is approved by the New York DMV.
Live Zoom or Self-Paced?
Live Zoom class (16+)
One five-hour session with a live instructor, so you can ask questions as you go. There's no final exam or quiz; you attend and take part in the full five-hour session. Afterward, your paper MV-278 is mailed to you (separate shipping fee) or you can pick it up at our Brooklyn office.
Self-paced online (18+)
Start any time, log in and out as you like, and take up to 30 days to finish. There's no final exam; each section ends with a short quiz, usually three questions. Score 70% or higher to move on, and if you miss it you can review the section and try again. Your completion is reported to the DMV electronically, and there's no paper certificate.

After You Finish the Class

Your certificate
After our live Zoom class, Drive Rite Academy issues your paper MV-278 certificate, which you can have mailed to you (expedited shipping available) or pick up at our Brooklyn office. If you take the self-paced course through our affiliate partner, your completion is reported to the DMV electronically and there is no paper certificate. The MV-278 is valid for one year from the issue date.
Schedule your road test
You schedule your road test with the New York DMV, online or by phone. You'll need your learner permit and an original, unexpired MV-278 (or MV-285). If you took the self-paced online course, the DMV already has your completion on record.
Keep building your skills
Practice regularly with a licensed supervising driver, and consider driving lessons with a professional instructor before test day. Our instructors can meet you within our pickup area, and our road test services include a car for your road test.
Once you're licensed, our 6-hour defensive driving course, taught live on Zoom in one day, can take up to 4 points off your point total for violations from the 18 months before you finish it, and can qualify you for a 3-year reduction of at least 10% on the base rate of your liability and collision insurance premiums (if you're the principal operator), per the NY DMV.
