Updated guide: For the latest, complete details on New York's 5-hour pre-licensing course, see our free 5-hour pre-licensing course guide.

If you want to get your New York driver's license, the DMV five hour course is your next step. Most first-time drivers in New York must complete it before the road test, unless they hold an MV-285 driver education certificate. At Drive Rite Academy, we teach the DMV five hour course live on Zoom with certified instructors, and we mail MV-278 certificates throughout New York State.

Whether you're in Brooklyn, Buffalo, Albany, or anywhere else in New York, this is your complete guide to getting started.

What Is the DMV Five Hour Course?

The DMV five hour

is officially called the Pre-Licensing Course. It’s required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) before you can schedule your road test.

This course covers:

• New York traffic laws and signs

• Defensive driving strategies

• Alcohol and drug safety awareness

• Risk reduction and emergency preparedness

• How to be a responsible, focused driver

Once completed, you receive the MV-278 certificate, which is valid for one year and required for booking your test.
