"What is the 5 Hour Pre-Licensing class?"
The Pre-Licensing Course, or better known as “the 5-hour class,” is designed specifically by the New York Department of Motor Vehicles to teach future drivers how to safely drive on the road.
Is the 5 Hour Class mandatory?
It is a mandatory course for New York State Permit Holders ages 16 and up. You are not able to schedule or take your road test if you have not completed the 5 Hour Pre-Licensing Course and received a Completion Certificate. The only exemption to this requirement is if you have completed Drivers Education and have an MV-285.
How can I take the 5 Hour Course?
The 5 Hour Pre-licensing Class is a DMV approved and mandated classroom course that provides useful knowledge for beginner drivers. It is designed to educate new drivers by promoting safe, courteous, defensive, and drug and alcohol-free driving. The 5 Hour class is usually the first formal training a new driver gets when doing their driver training. The 5 Hour class is not intended to teach you how to drive or offer advice on passing the road test.
The class covers a variety of topics:
- driving within the highway transportation system
- feelings, attitudes and risk taking
- alcohol, other drugs and driving
The 5 hour pre-licensing class is required to schedule and take your road test. When you successfully complete the course, you will be given a Pre-licensing course certificate (MV-278). Note that if you have completed a high school or college driver education course, you will receive a Driver Education Certificate (MV-285), and you do not need a Pre-licensing Course Certificate.
